Norfolk Christian Schools Established in 1952, Norfolk Christian Schools is a nondenominational, fully accredited Christian day school offering innovative Pre-K through grade 12 programs. Norfolk Collegiate School is an independent, coeducational day school enrolling over 900 students in kindergarten through grade twelve on two campuses. The campuses, which are approximately three miles apart, are both within a 10-minute drive of the downtown area. The middle school (6-8) and upper school (9-12) are located on Granby Street. The lower school (K-5) is located on Tidewater Drive. A nonprofit corporation, Norfolk Collegiate School is governed by a 37-member Board of Trustees, which includes parents, alumni and community leaders. Norfolk Collegiate School is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CASI.) Although situated in a metropolitan setting, the University offers a small-college look and feel, with tree-lined walkways, a mix of old and new buildings, and colorful gardens and ponds. Founded in 1930 as a division of the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion has grown into its own over the years and is now one of only 101 public universities with a Carnegie/Doctoral Research-Extensive distinction. Norfolk State University Norfolk State College was founded in 1935. The College, brought to life in the midst of the Great Depression, provided a setting in which the youth of the region could give expressions to their hopes and aspirations. At this founding, it was named the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. In 1942, the College became the independent Norfolk Polytechnic College, and two years later an Act of the Virginia Legislature mandated that it become a part of Virginia State College.
